The Way of the Warrior
Warrior Workshops and Events

In ancient times, the Tantrik master was often a powerful warrior-shaman. In fact, there are akharas - intensive training grounds - scattered across India. These served as martial training grounds for the warrior-monks of the 10 orders of yogi renunciates (the dasnami). These ascetics can still be seen in India carrying the various weapons of their tradition as they wander the countryside.

The warrior tradition offers a unique path of self-realization amongst the methodologies of Tantra. It is especially suited to practitioners who like to “go it alone." The student can practice meditation and technique once a day and attend classes to deepen their knowledge and experience by being in contact with the teacher and other advanced students.

Don’t be confused: this is not martial arts or martial sports. Authentic warrior traditions use the medium of martial arts, meditation and warrior conduct for the purpose of direct realization of our Essential Nature.

Complete training in the warrior tradition has these components equally emphasized:

  • Breath practice
  • Meditation and/or concentration practice
  • Martial technique training
  • Code of conduct or precepts of conduct
  • Healing (most often bone setting & deep tissue massage, but can include herbalism as well)
Trika Kula offers weekly classes in 3 types of martial technique as a part of the Way of the Warrior curriculum of courses and retreats. These are:

Stav – a Norwegian family transmitted system of warriorship which is concerned with training in the classical weapons (not empty hand), breath practice, healing, etc. This type of martial art is suitable to all ages and physical conditions. It is not competitive and there is no contact.

Visit www.martensstav.org to find out more information about the Märtens Stav Group practicing in Northern California.

Dragon Style Gong Fu – This is a Chinese martial art developed 400 years ago by a famous woman named Wu Mei. It emphasizes empty hand technique. It trains the body in unique ways to generate speed and power without developing gross musculature. Training also includes meditation, martial qi gong (breath practice), healing of fractures, sprains and strains with bone setting, massage and herbs.

Catch Wrestling – This is the premier style of martial wrestling (submission grappling) which came over from England to the USA in the 1700’s and was refined in the States in the late 1800’s early 1900’s. This is mixed freely with “Kushti” – the martial wrestling tradition of India. Most of the conditioning exercises used in the training sessions come directly from the powerful yoga systems developed by the Indian wrestlers.
